What is Google Cast for Education?

  1. Google Cast for Education is a free Chrome extension that allows students and teachers to share their screens wirelessly from anywhere in the classroom. Cast for Education carries video and audio across complex school networks, has built-in controls for teachers, and works seamlessly with Google Classroom.
  2. The Cast for Education extension runs on the teacher’s computer that’s connected to the classroom projector, and it doesn't require new hardware. Teachers receive casts through the Cast for Education extension, and students share their screens using the latest version of the Cast feature in Chrome.
  3. Note: Google Cast for Education is designed for G Suite for Education users.

  6. Prerequisites
  7. To use Google Cast for Education, your browser version must start with 52 or above. Most devices should be on version 52 already.
  8. You can check your version, using one of these ways:
    • In your Chrome browser URL bar enter chrome:chrome.
    • In your Chrome browser:
      • On a PC, click Menu Help About Google Chrome.
      • On a Mac, click More Help About Google Chrome.
      • On a Chrome OS computer, click More Help About Chrome OS.
  9. If your version is below 52, install any updates and click Relaunch to restart your browser.
  10. Teachers and students: If your Chrome device is locked to a lower version, contact your administrator.
  11. Administrators: Ensure that you are not blocking updates in the Google Admin Console.
  12. Note: If you tested Cast for Education in beta, you'll be automatically upgraded to the full release of Cast for Education with version 52 of the Chrome browser.

  15. Teachers: Set up your Cast for Education extension
  16. Make sure your browser is updated, and that you are signed in with your G Suite for Education account. Once you set up your Cast for Education extension, your settings will be saved on that device.
    1. Go to the Chrome Web Store.
    2. Click Add to Chrome.
    3. Click Add extension.
    4. To open the extension, click Google Cast for Education .
    5. Under Receiver name, enter a name for your cast extension, such as Room 301. Click Save.
    6. Click Share .
    7. To invite your students to cast, enter the name of a Classroom class or individual student email addresses and click Add.
    8. Select a level of access for each student or class:
      • Can present—Students can cast to your screen anytime you have the extension open.
      • Can request—Students can request to cast. You need to approve or deny each request.
      • Note: Students that aren’t on the list won't see the extension in their Chrome toolbar.
    9. Click Close.
  17. To start accepting casts from your students, open the Cast for Education extension on your computer. While the extension is open, you or anyone you've shared the extension with can cast to it. Casts appear within your Cast for Education extension on the teacher device connected to the projector.

  19. Make sure your device is updated, and that you are signed in with your G Suite for Education account.
    1. In your Chrome toolbar, click Cast . If there is no Cast icon in your Chrome toolbar, click Menu or More and click Cast.
    2. Click the name of your teacher’s cast extension, such as Room 301.
    3. (Optional) To switch between casting your whole screen and your current tab, click Cast to and make a selection.

  21. App to Extension Transition (July 2017)
  22. As of July 2017, Google is transitioning the Cast for Education Chrome app to a Chrome extension.
  23. To update the Cast for Education extension:
    • New users—Follow the instructions on this page to get started with the Chrome extension.
    • Existing users—Your app will automatically update and become an extension. You may need to accept the extension permissions before you are able to use the extension. To accept the permissions:
      1. Click More Google Cast for Education is Disabled.
      2. Click Accept permissions.
      3. To open the Cast for Education extension, in the Chrome toolbar, click Cast for Education .
